Assessment of the footprint of products, services or companies

A sustainability audit within your company enables you to better understand the impacts of your activities, by identifying both your strengths and areas of opportunity.

There are two approaches :

  • An assessment of your greenhouse gas emissions.
  • An assessment of the environmental impact of a product, service or system, considering all stages of its life cycle.

Through these analyses, you will be able to identify the main issues, priority areas of activity, and the first actions to implement.

Carbon footprint

Quantification of the carbon footprint of a product, service or company in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Carbon footprint based on the standard best suited to your company, e.g. ISO 14044, PEF, GHG Protocol, etc.
✓ List of potential action areas.
    ✓ Executive or detailed report.
✓ A robust and reliable Excel template designed to ensure data transparency and to present results in a clear and informative manner within an executive report.
  • Optional development of a greenhouse gas emissions monitoring tool.

Life cycle assessment

Assessment of the environmental impact of a product, service or company, considering all stages of its life cycle.

  • ✓ Helps identify areas where a product, service or company can be improved in order to reduce environmental impacts.
✓ Takes into account a range of environmental impacts beyond carbon footprint alone (air, water and soil pollution, resource consumption, ...). Use of the pertinent methodology for your product, service or company (EF 3.1, ReCiPe 2016, Impact World +, etc)

FAQ

A carbon footprint assessment is an accounting tool used to quantify a company’s carbon emissions. It provides a baseline of emissions over a reference period and therefore focuses on one specific aspect of sustainability.

A carbon footprint can be a very concrete first step, delivering quantified results. It can also help meet specific requests from clients who are themselves committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

A carbon footprint consists of six main stages :

  1. Appointment of an internal project team and definition of objectives.
  2. Definition of the scope by mapping activities and flows.
  3. Data collection.
  4. Calculation of emissions based on the data collected.
  5. Analysis of results and identification of potential reduction actions.
  6. Presentation of the results and action areas in the format defined in advance (full report, summary presentation, infographic,...).

At each stage, except for the emissions calculation stage (4), your input will be required. A carbon footprint is a collaborative project involving the different project stakeholders (the board of directors, executive management or management committee, and sustainability leads.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is an international framework designed to establish guidelines for better quantifying greenhouse gas emissions.

What does the GHG Protocol do ?

The GHG Protocol defines specific standards, including the three (scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3) used to assess the carbon footprint of an organisation or activity and the gas used in the framework.

What are the GHG Protocol “scopes”?

The GHG Protocol “scopes” are categories used to classify greenhouse gas emissions :

  • Scope 1 : Direct emissions from sources directly controlled by the organisation.
  • Scope 2 : Indirect emissions associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, heat or steam used by the organisation.
  • Scope 3 : Other indirect emissions arising from the organisation’s activities but occurring outside its direct perimeter, such as employee commuting or the manufacture of purchased products.

By using these categories, the GHG Protocol enables a comprehensive assessment of the climate impact of an organisation or activity.

Our studies include Scopes 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with the required framework. Scopes 1 and 2 are systematically covered. As part of a full carbon footprint assessment, all Scope 3 categories are taken into account. However, depending on the needs and in agreement with the client, certain Scope 3 categories may be excluded, although it is not recommended.

What should you do after a carbon footprint ?

After a carbon footprint : the main sources of emissions are now known. An emissions reduction plan, also known as a decarbonisation roadmap, can then be developed. It will bring together the actions to be implemented in order to achieve the reduction targets.

At this stage, support may be useful. By working with a consultant, you will also benefit from their network of service providers.

Periodically reassessing your carbon footprint enables you to monitor your progress. It is also recommended to update it when the company undergoes changes, such as in size, activities or operations.

A new carbon footprint can be carried out by either an internal or external team. We offer the development of a monitoring tool that enables your company’s employees to easily carry out future assessments. We could still help with a support time if you have questions. The goal is to help you become autonomous in assessing your own carbon footprint
